Daniss Jenkins turns down 2-year offer from Pistons

Detroit Pistons guard Daniss Jenkins declined an offer that would have kept him under contract for the rest of the current season and extended through next year.

Jenkins has carved out a consistent role in Detroit’s rotation this season while playing on a two-way deal, making his situation one to monitor closely.

Following Friday night’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors, the second-year guard now has only three NBA-eligible games remaining for the season.

Once those appearances are used, Jenkins would no longer be allowed to suit up for Detroit in NBA contests for the rest of the regular season.

On top of that limitation, two-way contract players are not permitted to participate in postseason games.

Detroit still has the option to convert Jenkins to a standard rest-of-season contract, a move that would immediately restore his eligibility for all remaining regular-season games and open the door for potential postseason action.

If that conversion were to happen, Jenkins would enter the offseason as a restricted free agent.

The Pistons could also choose to use their $5.1 million Bi-Annual Exception to present Jenkins with a more lucrative deal.

The downside of that approach is that once the BAE is used during this season, it would no longer be available for Detroit to utilize next year, adding another layer of complexity to the team’s decision-making process.
