Johnny Furphy of the Indiana Pacers was on the floor for the final defensive possession in Wednesday’s win over Chicago because the coaching staff trusts his ability on that side of the ball, according to Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star.
Furphy’s defensive reliability has helped him secure a significant role, as he has started 16 of the team’s last 17 games and continues to strengthen his case to remain part of the regular rotation beyond this season.
“He’s a tough-minded kid that has a good feel for having friction without committing fouls. That’s what we want,” Carlisle said.
“… He’s tough-minded, he’s physically tough, he’s put on a lot of strength and he’s made a lot of improvements in a lot of areas. The opportunity that he’s getting is important.”
Furphy has played 2 seasons for the Pacers. He has averaged 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds in 81 regular-season games.
