Mitch Johnson says Spurs maintain identity despite injuries

The Spurs have managed to string together two straight wins since Victor Wembanyama was sidelined with a calf strain, following up Sunday’s victory with a 10-point win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday.

They pulled it off while also being without Stephon Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year, who sat out with a hip flexor strain.

As Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News notes, De’Aaron Fox set the tone offensively with a team-high 26 points, but the win was far from a one-man effort.

Harrison Barnes stepped up with 23 points, giving San Antonio a reliable secondary scoring option.

Kelly Olynyk made a notable impact in limited time, finishing as a +15 in just 19 minutes. Off the bench, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson combined for 26 points and 13 rebounds, providing needed energy and physicality.

Even Luke Kornet, who didn’t score, delivered strong defensive minutes in his second start filling in for Wembanyama.

“We want to play our brand of basketball and try to maintain our same identity no matter who is in,” head coach Mitch Johnson said. “It was really good to see so many people help win.”

Fox echoed that mentality, acknowledging how much the roster has been stretched but emphasizing the importance of staying competitive.

“No one thought we’d be missing this many guys or two of our top three scorers,” Fox added. “We’ve had a lot of guys that have been in and out of the lineup. You’ve got to continue to get wins. That’s what good teams do.”
