As LeBron James returned to action Tuesday in Lakers’ 140-126 win over Utah, questions linger about how Deandre Ayton will adjust to the Hall of Famer’s presence, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. While some believe Ayton stands to benefit from open looks created by James, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, others remain skeptical.

A Western Conference executive told ESPN, “I imagine Deandre’s going to be a problem. He’s just not smart enough of a player,” citing concerns over his decision-making and inconsistent effort. The criticism comes even as Ayton has averaged 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds over 14 games this season.

James played 30 minutes in his first game of the 2025–26 season after missing 14 games with sciatica, recording 11 points and 12 assists. His return adds a new dynamic to the Lakers’ lineup, which ranks 16th in offensive efficiency and 17th in defense, highlighting a team still searching for balance.

Ayton has shown flashes of dominance, including 14 points and 10 rebounds against Utah and previous performances of 29 and 16 points in other November games. Yet evaluators remain cautious about his ability to consistently capitalize on James’ passing.

The Lakers’ roster skews young outside veterans like Marcus Smart and Maxi Kleber, with the majority of players closer in age to Bronny James than LeBron. This youth movement, combined with the team’s 11-4 record, illustrates both the potential and the inconsistencies that have defined their early season.

Despite questions about Ayton, the team has leveraged its depth effectively. Doncic leads with 34.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Reaves adds 28.1 points and 5.1 assists. LeBron’s leadership is expected to elevate the floor spacing and playmaking opportunities for the Lakers’ big men.

The Lakers return to Utah for a rematch on Nov. 23 before hosting the Clippers and Dallas in back-to-back home games. How Ayton adapts to James’ return may play a critical role in the team’s push to become a process-oriented, championship-caliber squad.
