The repercussions of last year’s blockbuster Luka Doncic trade are still being felt in Dallas, and the situation has only grown more complicated in the months since.
Following the dismissal of general manager Nico Harrison – whose decision to send Doncic to the Lakers was largely driven by the goal of bringing in Anthony Davis – the Mavericks are now preparing to gauge the league’s interest in Davis on the trade market.
According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Dallas plans to evaluate potential offers for the player as the February 5 trade deadline approaches.
The star big man is currently sidelined with a strained calf and is expected to remain out for at least another week.
Team governor Patrick Dumont has taken full control over decisions related to Davis’ eventual return, signaling a more hands-on approach in managing one of the franchise’s most expensive assets.
Financially, Davis represents a significant commitment: he is owed $54.1 million for the current season and another $121.2 million across the following two years.
He will also be eligible for an extension this coming offseason.
With the Mavericks already brushing up against the second tax apron, taking on additional long-term maximum salary for a player who has dealt with frequent injuries may no longer align with the organization’s long-term plan.
