Heat’s Tyler Herro out longer, loses award eligibility

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro took part in practice on Sunday for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery in September.

Still, the former Sixth Man of the Year cautioned that he won’t be rushing back onto the court, telling reporters that he expects to miss “at least one more week” while continuing his recovery. The update comes via Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.

As Chiang notes, this injury absence has broader implications for Herro beyond Miami’s current rotation.

Entering the season, there was a scenario in which the 25-year-old might have been able to secure a Designated Veteran contract extension – commonly referred to as a “super-max” deal – depending on whether he earned an All-NBA selection in 2025/26.

That possibility is no longer realistic due to the league’s 65-game minimum requirement for award eligibility. With Herro set to fall short of that threshold, he will soon be disqualified from consideration for major postseason honors.

Herro, however, did not push back against the rule. According to Chiang, he views the league’s policy as “fair,” noting that his intention has always been to stay available rather than chase accolades.

“I mean every year I try to come in with a mindset of playing the most games possible, not necessarily for accolades or anything like that. I just want to be on the floor as much as possible,” Herro said.

“That’s what they pay me to do. And last season I had a very healthy season. This season started weird for me, something I couldn’t really control. So once I’m back on the floor again, I’m going to do as much as I can to be out there for every game possible. That’s what I want to do. That’s my goal.”
