According to Brian Robb in a separate MassLive report, Hugo Gonzalez has performed at such a strong level to begin the season that the Celtics aren’t even considering sending him to the G League.

The 19-year-old rookie has appeared in 11 of Boston’s first 13 games and is logging 12.4 minutes per contest, earning trust from the coaching staff far earlier than many expected.

When asked if a developmental assignment with the Maine Celtics might still be an option, head coach Joe Mazzulla made it clear that it hasn’t crossed his mind.

“I haven’t thought about that, no,” Mazzulla said. He explained that Gonzalez approached training camp and the preseason with the right mindset and backed it up with his play.

“He just came into the season with an open mind through training camp and preseason, and I think he showed and proved, one through his work ethic, his maturity, but really his defensive instincts, that he could play at this level. And so I think that’s more valuable than anything at this particular time.”

While Mazzulla didn’t rule out reevaluating the situation later in the year, he emphasized that Gonzalez has earned his minutes and is already contributing to winning.

“We’ll assess it as it goes on but he’s proven he can play and can impact winning. He’s got to get better at continuing to do that.”
