Tyronn Lue pointed to rebounding as the key issue in Saturday night’s 114–103 defeat to the Phoenix Suns.
“I thought Zu did a good job on the glass, but overall they just beat us to the long rebounds that we couldn’t get to,” he said.
The Clippers struggled to control the boards, allowing Phoenix multiple second-chance opportunities. Lue emphasized, “We talk about every day just turn, check, hit, and pursue the basketball…we just have to be better at doing it.”
Despite missing Kawhi Leonard for the third straight game, Lue saw positives in the team’s effort. “When it gets tough, we’ve got to get tougher, and I liked our fight back tonight,” he said, highlighting moments when the Clippers tried to capitalize on Booker being on the bench.
John Collins provided a spark off the bench with 19 points, earning praise from Lue for his energy. “He’s been good…on the offensive glass, making open spot-up threes. We need that juice,” the coach said.
Lue acknowledged the impact of Kawhi’s absence, particularly in rebounding and defensive assignments. “Everything just rebounding, on defense, and being able to put two on the basketball…another guy that can help James,” he explained.
Defensively, the Clippers struggled to contain the Suns’ shooting, giving up 16 three-pointers. Lue stressed adjustments: “We can’t allow teams to have catch-and-shoot threes…we’ve got to close to the body and make sure guys can’t get easy shots.”
Lue also noted the growing pains for Cam Christie, who has been productive in limited minutes. “Just his pop, his energy…he’s going to make some mistakes growing, but overall he’s doing a good job,” he said.
Looking ahead, Lue emphasized patience and consistency. “We’ve been through it before…we’re not going to let go of the rope. We’re going to be in good shape,” he said, focusing on team cohesion while Kawhi remains sidelined.
Despite the fourth straight loss, Lue highlighted his belief in the team’s intent and competitiveness. “I thought we had the right intent…they just played better than we did,” he said, emphasizing that the Clippers will continue improving in the coming games.
