Ryan Hollins spoke with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson about the Houston Rockets’ 2025-26 roster and the unique role Kevin Durant will play under coach Ime Udoka.
Hollins described Durant’s shift to power forward as a strategic adjustment that maximizes both his skill set and the team’s young talent.
Hollins noted the Rockets’ offense under Udoka prioritizes defense and equal opportunity. “If you’re open, you shoot the ball, you got a post-up or you have a player, you go make the play,” he said, highlighting the flexibility Durant will have in the system.
The former center emphasized that Durant’s role is not strictly traditional. While lineups may see him at the four or five, Hollins said Durant can also operate as a two, allowing the Rockets to exploit mismatches and play a more positionless style.
Hollins also spoke about Jabari Smith Jr.’s growth alongside Durant. He described their connection as mentor and protégé, noting how Durant’s guidance is shaping Smith’s shot selection and overall confidence on the court.
The analyst praised Udoka’s coaching for its adaptability. Hollins explained that Udoka adjusts to the players he has, rather than forcing a style. This flexibility has helped young stars like Alperen Sengun develop, while giving veterans like Durant the freedom to impact games in multiple ways.
Clint Capela’s return and the Rockets’ depth were also discussed. Hollins compared Capela to iconic role players, highlighting his reliability and team-first mentality. He also touched on Dorian Finney-Smith, who will see a more prominent offensive role this season.
Hollins reflected on the Rockets’ chemistry, noting the value of familiar connections like Durant and Jeff Green, who have known each other for years. “Kevin steps in with a familiar face and that helps him be more comfortable,” he said.
The analyst concluded by noting opportunities for young players such as Amen Thompson and the impact of Fred VanVleet’s injury. Hollins said these circumstances allow emerging talents to gain meaningful minutes and experience, which could be pivotal for the Rockets’ season.
