It has become increasingly common for NBA veterans to remain high-level contributors even after turning 40. Stephen Curry is still nearly three years away from that milestone, but he’s already thinking ahead.
Speaking to Mark Medina of EssentiallySports, the Warriors guard explained that his goal is to stay in such good physical condition that the decision to continue playing will be his to make.
“All I’ll say is that I just want the option and if I’m at a legitimate ability to be able to play,” Curry said. “I don’t know if it’ll make sense or if I would want to, whatever the case is. But if I can make the decision and the decision is not made for me, that’s a big, big point.”
Curry remains one of the premier guards in the NBA as he enters his 17th season. Last year, he earned a spot on the All-NBA Second Team and made his 11th All-Star appearance.
He played in 70 games, averaging 24.5 points in 32.2 minutes per game. From three-point range, he continued to be a dominant force, hitting 39.7% while leading the league in both attempts and makes.
His ability to sustain this level of play is tied to his offseason discipline. Trainer Brandon Payne told Medina that this past summer emphasized strength work and increasing the speed of Curry’s decision-making in game situations.
“A lot of it is the foundational work that I’ve put in since I started,” Curry said. “One, I still love it. I’m blessed with being with a team around me that has helped take the spirit that I’m trying to put into it and give me the framework that keeps the body limber and loose and the injury prevention stuff. The rest of it is a toughness to get out there and do the work. I still love and want to keep it going.”
