Stacks first into county final

Austin Stacks have qualified for the Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Football Championship final.


In the last four they defeated Rathmore at Fitzgerald Stadium by 1-16 to 1-9.

Stacks were ahead by 3 points to 1 after 5 minutes. Rathmore were level by the 12th minute. At the end of the first quarter Stacks led by 4 points to 3. Rathmore drew level at 4 points apiece after 20 minutes. A Paddy Lane two pointer in the 29th minute had Stacks ahead again. That advantage was doubled thanks to a Joe O’Connor two pointer on the hooter. At half time it was 0-8 to 0-4.


After Stacks put over the first 2 points of the second period a Shane Ryan 2 pointer cut the gap in the 37th minute to 10 points to 6. It was 11 to 7 ten minutes into the half, Stacks going on to make it a 6 points advantage at 13-7. Rathmore put over in the 49th minute to reduce the gap to 5 at 0-8 to 0-13. Stacks were ahead by 15 points to 9 with 9 minutes remaining. Then came 2 goals in 60 seconds; Joe O’Connor goaling for Stacks before John Moynihan did likewise for Rathmore. That made it 1-15 to 1-9 with 6 minutes to go but Stacks were never in danger.
