Varane had missed the last three Premier League games for his club before the World Cup and had feared he would miss the tournament in Qatar with an ankle issue.

But he was fine to play for France, managing an impressive 621 minutes for Didier Deschamps’ side as they made it to their second final in as many tournaments.

It is believed that Varane was one of the players impacted by a virus that plagued the French side in the build-up to Sunday’s final, but he recovered in time to start his sixth game out of seven at the Lusail Stadium.
