Eddie Howe turned to his big guns once again as Newcastle attempted to edge past Leicester into the semi-finals.
Howe reversed the eight changes he made for Saturday’s FA Cup third round defeat at League One Sheffield United, and there was a return to the bench after illness for Allan Saint-Maximin.
Leicester counterpart Brendan Rodgers adopted a similar approach, restoring seven of the men who stood down for the FA Cup trip to Gillingham with Marc Albrighton’s retention in place of the injured Boubakary Soumare the only change to the side which lost to Fulham on January 3.
