The yearly MGI Scrabble Premier League, a competition modelled after the game of football, concluded its preliminary stages at Homeville Plus Hotel Benin, in Edo State, at the weekend, with Ewarah Squiz and Whiskey Godsfavour winning their respective divisions.
Speaking on matchday three of the competition, founder of Mind Games Incorporated (MGI), Lukeman Owolabi, expressed joy about the turnout of players for the event and how smooth the process has been in the current season.
“The launch of the MGI Scrabble Premier League (MSPL) in 2019 has proven to be the best thing that has happened to Nigerian scrabble in recent times. The inaugural edition was highly successful and within a year, the MSPL experienced over 85 per cent growth, expanding to a two-division league.
“The 2023 season will have 18 teams, two divisions, and 205 rounds with over N6 million in prize money to be won,” he said. He called on potential sponsors, individuals, and brands to partner with the team to achieve the full potential of the MGI Scrabble Premier League (MSPL).
Matchday three of the league featured two major divisions; A & B with six teams, 30 players in Division A with 12 teams, 60 players in Division B. Division A teams played a total of 10 games while Division B teams played 12 games.
At the end of match-day three, Ewarah Squiz and Hurricanes topped Division A individuals and teams respectively, while Whiskey Godsfavor and D. Warriors lead Division B.
This year’s MSPL grand finale will hold on October 6 and 7, 2023, at the Golfview Hotel and Suites, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, while The MGI Scrabble Grand Slam holds from October 13 to 15, 2023 at the same venue.
