LIONEL MESSI suffered an injury scare on his first start of the season while Luis Suarez was jeered off as Barcelona edged past Villarreal.
Fresh from his Fifa Best triumph on Monday, the Argentine was replaced at the start of the second half in the 2-1 Nou Camp win.
Messi, who had recovered from a calf injury to feature, was making his 400th La Liga start.
But now the South American has a fresh blow to worry about.
He said: “When something happens to Messi, everyone stops, not only on the field, but in the stands as well.
“As a precaution we have decided not to risk it. In theory, it is nothing more but we will see tomorrow how it is.”
Messi received treatment on the side of the pitch midway through the opening period and continued to play on until the break, when he was replaced by Ousmane Dembele.
The forward did manage to provide an assist during his brief outing, swinging in a corner for Antoine Griezmann to head home early on.
Arthur Melo doubled the advantage on the quarter hour mark from 30 yards but ex-Arsenal hero Santi Cazorla pulled one back for the visitors in spectacular fashion before the break.
Despite the best efforts from the visitors, Barcelona held on to claim the points and ease the pressure on Valverde after a poor start to the campaign.
The result lifts them up to fourth in La Liga but the Catalans are still without a clean sheet in six matches.
And former Liverpool striker Suarez’s night also ended in disappointing fashion following another subdued display.
The veteran was booed by a large portion of the home crowd as he made his way off to be replaced by Ansu Fati during the closing stages.
