GIANNI INFANTINO has declared Russia 2018 the ‘best World Cup’ of all time.

The Swiss-Italian head of Fifa has been an advocate of the Video Assistant Referee and expanding the tournament to 40 teams since replacing Sepp Blatter.

Who is Fifa president Gianni Infantino?

BORN in Switzerland to Italian parents, Infantino is one of five children.

Fluent in Italian, English, French, and German, he studied law at university before heading to work as Secretary General of the International Center for Sports Studies in Neuchatel.

He started working for Uefa in 2000 and progressed up the ranks, eventually becoming Secretary General in 2009.

Infantino was crucial in making Euro 2016 feature 24 teams and is an advocate of Fair Play.

Since becoming Fifa president, he has pushed hard to introduce the Video Assistant Referee and plans to expand the World Cup to feature 40 teams in the future.

When did he take over from Sepp Blatter?

INFANTINO succeeded Sepp Blatter as Fifa president in 2016.

With his election, he became the first Italian to hold the position.

How much is his salary?

AFTER Blatter’s much-publicised salary was revealed to be £2.2million-a-year, Infantino agreed to take a pay-cut in his new role.

He currently earns £1.16m-a-year and didn’t take bonuses in 2016.

Fifa also revealed that he gets a chauffeured car, paid lodgings and monthly expenses around £1500.
