President Donald Trump has shifted his tone on Stephen A. Smith’s potential political future, moving from praise in 2025 to public skepticism after the ESPN personality criticized him during the 2026 NBA Finals.
Speaking on June 9, Trump responded to Smith’s recent comments about his attendance at the NBA Finals, where the ESPN analyst described the president’s appearance as “narcissistic.” Trump said Smith was a “nice guy” but questioned whether he possessed the qualities needed to run for the nation’s highest office.
“He is a nice guy but you need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. I don’t think Stephen has it,” Trump said.
The remarks marked a notable contrast from Trump’s position just over a year earlier. On April 30, 2025, the president publicly endorsed the idea of Smith entering politics, pointing to his ability to generate attention and attract large audiences.
At the time, Trump suggested that Smith’s media profile and communication skills could translate into a viable political campaign. The latest comments indicate a significant change in how he views the television personality’s prospects.
The exchange comes as Smith continues to face questions about whether he will eventually seek public office. Although he has repeatedly discussed the possibility, he has not launched a campaign and remains under contract with ESPN.
Smith has previously stated that he was leaving “all doors open” regarding a future run for office. However, he has also acknowledged the financial realities involved in such a decision.
Federal rules would require Smith to separate himself from his lucrative broadcasting role if he formally entered a presidential race. Recent reports have indicated that he remains reluctant to make that move unless he can preserve his income and overall quality of life.
The timing of Trump’s comments also coincides with one of the biggest sports events of the year. The 2026 NBA Finals are currently underway, with the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks battling for the championship. The series has already produced significant attention, including discussion surrounding Trump’s presence at Game 3 and Smith’s reaction to it.
