Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland exited Monday night’s 140–138 overtime loss to the Miami Heat in the third quarter after suffering an injury to his left toe.

The extent of the injury is still uncertain, leaving questions about whether he may have aggravated the same toe issue that required surgery during the offseason.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters after the game that the team did not yet have a clear update on Garland’s condition.

“Yeah, I haven’t gotten an update yet,” Atkinson said. “Obviously couldn’t continue, took a fall there and tried to come back. So we’ll get an update here soon.”

Atkinson added that Garland initially attempted to play through the pain before deciding he couldn’t continue.

“You know, we talked about it. Talked about it with medical, and Darius, he wanted to give it another try. And then went back at it and then just couldn’t continue,” the coach explained.

Garland had already missed the first seven games of the season while recovering from the same left toe injury.

Monday’s contest marked only his third game since returning to the lineup, making the latest setback a concerning development for both the player and the team.
