Bills safety Damar Hamlin remained down on field after a scary hit
NFL player Damar Hamlin is in critical condition in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field during a game on Monday night. The Buffalo Bills safety collapsed to the ground after making a tackle on Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins before being treated by first responders.
CPR was administered and his heartbeat restored on the field before Hamlin was taken from the field in an ambulance to a local hospital. “Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals,” the Bills posted on their official Twitter account.
“His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”
Hamlin needed both an automated external defibrillator and CPR on the field, and left the field with a pulse but unable to breathe on his own, Fox 19 reports. The game between the Bills and Bengals was officially postponed around 90 minutes after kickoff.
According to WCPO9 journalist Marshall Kramsky, Damar Hamlin’s marketing rep said that the Buffalo Bills safety’s “vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat.” The rep added that the hospital team is “currently running tests”.
Damar Hamlin: Doctor explains what may have caused cardiac arrest
Dr David Agus, a professor at the University of Southern California, tells CBS he suspects Damar Hamlin suffered commotio cordis, which is an extremely rare phenomenon caused by a blunt force trauma into the chest that stops the heart.
“You saw in that tackle the opponent’s helmet went into his chest, so he had blunt force trauma into his chest. In the exact right spot, in the exact right moment during his heartbeat, it caused his heart to have what we call an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), not to beat effectively to push blood to the brain. So he stood up, not enough blood went to the brain, he fell down, and that heart was in ventricular fibrillation.
“What we know with commotio cordis, which is this condition, is that at every minute you delay shocking or resuscitating them, what happens in there is a 10 per cent increase in mortality. They started CPR right away, which is great. My hope is they were able to restart the heart soon enough to be able to get blood flow to the brain so there’s no damage there.
“There are about 30 of these cases a year that happen in the United States. It happens in Little League baseball, when a ball thrown by a pitcher hits a person in the chest. It happens in soccer when there’s something that causes that blunt force trauma. It’s remarkably rare.”

Damar Hamlin: ‘The game does not matter now’, says Stephen A Smith
ESPN pundit Stephen A Smith reacts to Damar Hamlin suffering a cardiac arrest and being listed in a critical condition following his hit against the Cincinnati Bengals: “I was scared. To see him get up and then fall back down, it was scary.
“We’ve been watching the NFL for decades and we’ve seen concussions, players sitting still after a hit because they think they might be paralysed. I don’t recall ever seeing anything like this. To see him make a tackle and then collapse…
“It was scary and incredibly sad to see the players crying. Stefon Diggs, Josh Allen and others, it reminds you that when players talk about family, this is what it means. To witness the love and concern written across the faces of everyone involved, particularly the Buffalo Bills, is a harsh reminder of the violence that exists in this sport.
“We all know that a play can end a career, it can end a season. But the notion that it could end somebody’s life.. The game does not matter now, it is not that important. Our hearts and prayers go out to Damar Hamlin and that he’s able to survive this.”

Damar Hamlin: Bills players arrive back in Buffalo
The Buffalo Bills plan to return to their team facility in Orchard Park, New York on early Tuesday morning, with the exception of a few players, including star Steffon Diggs, who stayed behind with Damar Hamlin.

Damar Hamlin: Fans gather outside UC Medical Center
Kathryn Bersani and her mother, Gayle, were among the Bills fans who traveled from Buffalo for the game and went to the hospital from the stadium.
“This is our family Christmas,” Kathryn Bersani said. “We thought it would be a great game. Joe (Burrow) and Josh (Allen) are such great men. Sad, sad time. Such a shock. I just hope he can live a normal life. It stunned us.”
Chuck and Janet Kohl went to the hospital after watching the game at home.“
This is much more important than football,” Chuck Kohl said. “Had to come and pray for Mr. Hamlin.”

‘Human garbage’: Charlie Kirk blasted for ‘sick’ Damar Hamlin conspiracy tweet
Conservative talk show host Charlie Kirk was slammed for peddling an anti-vaccine conspiracy theory after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed during a game against Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night.
The 24-year-old footballer suffered a cardiac arrest and was administered CPR and a defibrillator before being taken in an ambulance to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition. The hit that appeared to have caused the injury came in the first quarter of the game when he was tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.
While fans waited outside the hospital holding candles and shared posts praying for his speedy recovery, some saw it as an opportunity to suggest that a vaccine may have been the reason behind the collapse.
Kirk had falsely speculated that more people have died after taking the Covid-19 vaccine than from coronavirus. Mr Kirk offered his prayers for Hamlin in his previous tweets but quickly jumped the bandwagon of conspiracy theorists to say: “This is a tragic and all too familiar sight right now. Athletes dropping suddenly.”
Adam Kinzinger, the outgoing Republican member of Congress, responded to Mr Kirk’s tweet by calling him “the biggest piece of human garbage that can possibly exist right now”. “I literally think you are done now. Using this tragedy for your BS lies is sick,” he said.

Skip Bayless under fire for Damar Hamlin tweet
Fox Sports hosts Skip Bayless has come under fire for appearing to question why the NFL would postpone the Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game following Damar Hamlin’s on-field collapse.
While a decision on the clash between two top AFC contenders was yet to have been made, Bayless tweeted: “No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game – but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome … which suddenly seems so irrelevant.”
In a follow-up tweet, Bayless clarified his comments and apologised if there had been a misunderstanding. He said: “Nothing is more important than that young man’s health. That was the point of my last tweet. I’m sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to.”
However, the former ESPN pundit was criticised for his “disrespectful” comment, which was branded as the “worst take ever”. The two-time NBA all-star Isaiah Thomas replied: “I hope they fire you bro!!! For you to even THINK of the game is very sad.”

The Bills-Bengals game has major playoff implications. Both teams are battling for the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Drafted in the sixth round by the Bills in 2021, Hamlin played in 14 games as a rookie and then became a starter this season after Micah Hyde was injured.
In 2020, Hamlin began organising an annual Christmas toy drive in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pa. By early Tuesday, a community toy drive organised by Hamlin had surged to more than $3.2 million in donations. His stated goal was $2,500.
Bills offensive lineman Rodger Saffold, in a post on Twitter, described Hamlin as a “kind, caring, extremely hard worker.” Saffold wrote that Hamlin is “loyal, honest and can always put a smile on your face. He is more than an athlete, he is a son and brother.”

Damar Hamlin – recap: What happened to Buffalo Bills player?
Hamlin was hurt while tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins on a seemingly routine play that didn’t appear unusually violent.
Higgins was running with the ball on a 13-yard pass from Joe Burrow when he led with his right shoulder, hitting Hamlin in the chest. Hamlin then wrapped his arms around Higgins’ shoulders and helmet to drag him down.
Hamlin quickly got to his feet, appeared to adjust his face mask with his right hand, and then fell backward about three seconds later and lay motionless.
Hamlin was down for 19 minutes while receiving medical attention. WXIX-TV in Cincinnati reported that Hamlin required an automated external defibrillator (AED) in addition to CPR on the field.
