BARCELONA players, past and present, who have won European titles are set to receive a lifetime salary.
And the recipients have Lionel Messi to thank, for his winner against Manchester United in the 2009 Champions League final.
It’s been revealed former club president Joan Laporta is to award every single winner of a European title at Barca with a lifetime salary.
Juan Carlos Heredia, who won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1979, is one of the recipients, and has told how Messi inspired the reward.
Heredia said to The Tactical Room: “’When Barcelona won the Champions League final in Rome against Manchester United with a goal from Messi, the club president declared that all those who were European champions with Barcelona were going to receive a salary for life.
“And he fulfilled it.”
More than 290 players could be benefiting from the promise made by ex-Barca president Joan Laporta.
The La Liga holders have amassed five Champions League tiles, four Cup Winners’ Cups and three Fairs Cups.
Spanish politician Laporta was president of the Nou Camp club from 2003 to 2010, and oversaw as they won six trophies in one season under Pep Guardiola in 2009.
Since Messi 2009 winner against United, Barca have won the Champions League twice more, in 2011 and 2015.
The Spanish champions lead their Champions League group this season ahead of Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Slavia Praha in Group F.
