Captain of Abeokuta Golf Club, Ladi Adegbite, has commended oil and gas outfit, Oando, for its role in ensuring the success of the 10th Alake Golf Tournament held at the Abeokuta Golf Club last weekend.
The event, also christened Alake @80 Golf Tournament, drew participants from across the country to celebrate the septuagenarian monarch.
Speaking on the competition, Adegbite said: “It’s phenomenal for Abeokuta Golf Club to be given the opportunity to remain the host club of the Alake Golf Tournament by a company in the calibre of Oando.
“We are not the biggest nor the richest club, but we are a growing club and such recognition means a lot to us because Oando is a very big company in that matter… we pray that God gives the management of the company the understanding to progress higher.”
On the three-day competition, he said, “we had a great tournament; everything started with the caddies event on Thursday; the professionals played on Friday and Saturday crowned it with the amateurs.
“Interestingly, the Oando Deputy Managing Director, Mofe Boyo, took his time to play the 18 holes and he was calm; we enjoyed ourselves because golf is life, fun and all the good things one can think about; in all these we again have Oando to thank for making it happen.”
Also speaking on the event, the Osi of Egbaland, Bode Mustapha, said, “we have to thank Oando for being there for the Alake’s Golf Tournament; Oando has always been there, but thank God it has pledged now to make sports sponsorship a priority in its strings of social responsibility.”
Chairman of the local organising committee (LOC), Kola Adeneye, described the 10th Alake Golf Tournament as unique, as it marked the 80th birthday of the Alake of Egbaland.
Winners at the end of the tournament include Owolabi Olajide, who shot 69 gross to emerge as best gross winner and champion.
