Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins called for the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans to relocate, citing low attendance and financial concerns.

Speaking on Run It Back Tuesday, Cousins said, “It was time 5-6 years ago. Especially New Orleans. You go the games there’s 36 people… court side’s $25… Blow it up, move on… there are no fans.”

Both franchises are small-market teams facing financial and arena challenges, fueling speculation about their long-term viability. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated reported earlier this month that relocation discussions have been quietly circulating within NBA circles.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has confirmed that while expansion into cities like Seattle and Las Vegas is preferred, relocation remains a possibility. The Grizzlies and Pelicans are seen as logical candidates due to upcoming arena expirations and persistent attendance concerns.

Memphis currently holds a 4-8 record in the Western Conference through 12 games. New Orleans has a 2-8 record, ranking last in the Western Conference, though Zion Williamson leads the team with 22.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

Both franchises face financial pressures exacerbated by low ticket sales and small-market dynamics. Arena lease timelines in Memphis and New Orleans, combined with weak fan engagement, have drawn attention from league executives evaluating the long-term sustainability of the teams.

While relocation discussions are rarely made public, whispers about moving the Grizzlies or Pelicans to larger markets such as Seattle or Las Vegas have circulated.
