Mavericks may explore trading Anthony Davis

A major storyline emerging in Dallas centers on whether the Mavericks will consider trading star forward Anthony Davis.

John Hollinger of The Athletic suggested that moving Davis could represent the team’s best long-term strategy, arguing that despite his injury concerns, the 32-year-old would still draw significant interest across the league and bring back a substantial return of draft capital and young talent.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, multiple league sources share that viewpoint, with several executives believing the Mavericks should at least explore what the market might offer for Davis in the coming months.

As one Western Conference decision-maker told ESPN, “You have Flagg, but you’re old and you don’t own your picks. [They have to] be comfortable with taking two steps back if that’s the necessary path. Be patient. They need to lose this year, but I don’t see Dumont being comfortable with taking a step back. It’s not natural as a new owner.”

With Davis still playing at a high level when healthy, the decision will likely hinge on whether new ownership, led by Louis Dumont, is willing to sacrifice short-term competitiveness to rebuild around younger players and future draft picks.
