Now though the Paris Saint-Germain attacker thinks he has put himself in a position to finally end the grip held by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the most famous individual award in football.

No player other than Messi or Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or since Kaka did so in 2007, but Mbappe firmly believes this could be someone else’s year.

When asked for his likely winners, he overlooked Messi completely and told France Football: ‘For the favourites, I will say Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Raphael Varane… and me.’

Ronaldo is an obvious contender for the trophy again after helping Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League title last season.

Mbappe’s colleague Neymar is also among the front runners after he helped PSG to the Ligue 1 title in his debut campaign in the French capital.

Luka Modric will undoubtedly be among the favourites after he built on another European trophy with Los Blancos by taking the Golden Ball in Russia and inspiring Croatia to the World Cup final.

Mbappe also backed his compatriot Raphael Varane to be among the contenders. He too was in the team that defeated Liverpool in Kiev before heading out to Russia and producing a number of mammoth performances that completed a stunning summer.
